Fix Face Unlock Not Working on Samsung S21, S21Ultra, S21+

From the very first day, Samsung’s Face Unlock is monstrous, after receiving a lot of complaints, Samsung finally took a step ahead and improved Face Recognition to the next level. Later on, Samsung released several mid-range smartphones with Face Unlock features to quickly unlock the device without entering a PIN or Password. Unlike, password, pin, or pattern, Face Unlock is not secure, but the brand has added this feature to unlock the phone without manual intervention.

Remove Accessories (Hat/Eyewear)

While registering a Face ID, did you wear sunglasses/eyewear or Hat or anything that makes your appearance quite different than now? Most of the time, users try to unlock the device with Sunglasses or Masks, to be honest, sometimes the device recognizes your face, at the same time, Face Unlock won’t work.

If you’ve spectacles then add an alternate appearance wearing the spectacles to avoid removing the spectacles to unlock the phone. Meanwhile, you can remove the accessories as I mentioned, and try to unlock the phone.

Clean Front Camera

Front Camera plays a significant role in recognizing your Face when using Face Unlock. Bring a clean cloth, little damped, and clean the screen gently without pressuring or damaging the display, along with the front camera.

Add Alternate Face ID

We’ve seen many Samsung users fixing the Face Unlock not working issue on Samsung S21, S21Plus, S21Ultra by registering an alternate Face ID. Often system misinterprets the Face, and to overcome this possibility, registering an alternate Face ID works great. Keep the older Face ID as it is and add a new Face ID.

  1. Go to the Settings.
  2. Tap Biometrics and security.
  3. Select Face Recognition.
  4. Confirm your identity by entering the PIN, Pattern or Password.
  5. Select Yes or No when you’re asked, “Do you wear glasses”?
  6. Next, turn On and Off for the following options,
  7. Face unlock
  8. Stay on Lock screen until swipe
  9. Faster recognition
  10. Requires open eyes
  11. Brighten screen
  12. And complete the setup.

Toggle Fast Recognition On/Off

Samsung allows us to manually switch on and off the Fast Recognition option. When Fast Recognition is enabled, it reduces the security and could unlock the phone if someone try to unlock it by using your picture or video. Therefore, it is advisable to keep the Fast Recognition option Off. If it is already disabled, then enable it and try to use Face Unlock.

Check for Updates

Among the other reasons, outdated firmware can be a reason why Face Unlock not working on Samsung S21 Ultra, S21, S21 Plus. To fix and stabilize the device, Samsung often rolls out software updates, here’s how to update the Samsung S21, S21 Plus, S21 Ultra.

  1. Go to the Settings app.
  2. Tap Software Update.
  3. Tap Check for updates.
  4. If available, Download and install the update.

Remove Face Data

Like any phone, we can also reset the Face Data. Over the time, Face Data gets corrupted and hence device won’t recognize your Face. Its time to remove Face Data from device and re-add it again.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Select Biometrics and security > Face recognition.
  3. Confirm the action by entering the passcode, and select Remove face data.
  4. Once the Face data is removed from the system, tap on Register face and tap on Plus icon to register new face.

Disable Lock Screen Swipe

Face unlock will unlock the screen but will keep you on lock screen until you swipe the screen. By default, Stay on lock screen until swipe comes enabled, now to quickly unlock the phone via Face Unlock, disable this setting.

  1. Go to the Settings app.
  2. Tap Biometrics and security.
  3. Select Face recognition.
  4. Turn Off Stay on lock screen.

Turn Off Require Open Eyes

Highly recommended feature if you really care about security, because with this option disabled, you can even unlock the device wearing glasses. However, as a troubleshooting workaround, let’s disable this for some time.

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Biometrics and security.
  3. Turn Off Require open eyes.

Enable Brighten Screen

Its quite not possible for Face Recognition to work in low-light environments with 100% success rate. Keeping the same in mind, Samsung has added an option to brighten screen when you try to use Face Unlock.

  1. Open Biometrics and security from the Settings app.
  2. Tap Face recognition.
  3. Enable Brighten Screen.

Erase Device to Factory Settings

Backup the device before you take this hard decision to erase the phone to Factory Settings. Since none of the above solutions did work for you, it’s time to erase the phone to factory settings.

  1. Open the Settings.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Go to Factory data reset.
  5. Read the disclaimer and tap Reset.

Contact Samsung

It seems to be a hardware issue, which can’t be dealt with the above-mentioned solutions. In that case, contact Samsung Support, if the unit is damaged, let the Samsung Technician examine and take action.
